About

A company built to need us less.

Oscille is a research company. We build what we call the seed, software meant to run a business without a person in charge, and we are the first company trying to run that way.

01What we do

We are rebuilding our own company around the seed. The plan is to let it improve itself, to study its own work, learn, and rewrite its own parts, including the ones we built by hand. Because our company is meant to be a copy of the seed, making the company better should make the seed better.

The goal is a seed that works for many kinds of company, not just ours. Our own problems are the first test, never the point. Everything else, staying alive, staying legal, leaving people free and well, staying within limits, is a line it must stay inside while it works.

02How the company is organised

This is how the company is meant to be organised. Two halves share the seed. The Forge builds tools for the seed and improves the seed itself. The Field takes the seed to real problems outside Oscille and starts a new company for each one it finds. Both start child companies. The Forge's children sell a tool. The Field's children each solve one problem.

We do not sell the seed itself. A sold copy would run under someone else's goals and checks, and we could not stand behind what it does. Customers buy what it makes.

03What people do

No person is meant to make the day-to-day decisions. People keep one job, and the plan is that they keep it permanently. That job is holding the evaluator, the method every change is scored against. Our starting point is that software cannot mark its own work, and that what counts as a good outcome for people is a value, not a skill.

Every other job people hold today is one the seed is meant to take over. A signature where the law wants a person, a pair of hands where robots are not yet reliable, a name on a funding contract. Anyone in such a position is to be insured and paid for the risk it puts on them. We ourselves are the first of these people, and the test for when we are no longer needed is written down in advance and measured from outside.

04How we work

Every change to how Oscille works starts as a proposal with four parts, the problem as people feel it, the change, the expected outcome, and how we will know. Every change that lands is scored by a person. A practice becomes stable only through that gate. Our code and text follow four short conventions.

All of this is public. The constitution says what the company is for, what it must never do, who decides what, and how those rules change. The evaluator is the scoring method. Both change only in the open, by pull request, and the request has to state the problem, the evidence, the replacement, and how the replacement is expected to fail.
